Cargo should be transported on rail tho. America should keep up the high amount of cargo trains because the trucks are congesting the streets. The rails should be expanded so passenger trains could better share with cargo trains

Well, I live in Spain and trains suck here too. We are proud of our high-speed trains technology (AVE), but mostly construct it in the foreign, meanwhile we have a few kilometres of AVE and most railroads are too slow. Even though they are slow, they are extremely expensive, having a single ride for 120$, while the same travel in a plane it’s 20$. The plane takes 20’ of fly, plus check-in and all that stuff, the train takes 12 hours. I would travel in train even though it is slower, if, at least, it costs the same than the plane. Trains should be the mid and long travel solution, because of the ecological impact of planes, but we are far from there, unless you live in the Center of Europe, or United Kingdom.

Passenger trains maybe. Our working trains for cargo do not. Slow? Why because it's not a bullet train? The microwave age has fucked with your brain. You try pushing thousands of tons of cargo with your bare hands and tell me how fast and far you move it lol. Bullet trains don't carry any where near as much as the "slow" powerhouses used for real cargo. And they are all over. Sorry but this video sucks massive d-

I’m from Denmark and I can surely say that trains aren’t the greatest method of travel, DSB or the Danish railroad company operate all the railroads throughout the country but it’s still pretty expensive a 4 hour train ride from Copenhagen to Aarhus might set You back at around 800DKK or 120USD a plane from CPH to AAR is about 200-300 DKK cheaper the only thing keeping DSB alive at this point is there revenue from the “s-tog” which is a subway-like-train system that operates all over Copenhagen and the surrounding areas

When I had to get a train from Penn Station to DC, it cost me $160, for ~230 miles. In my home country, I can go from my hometown to the city I study in for a little less than €10. It’s a 65 mile trip. The same 230 mile trip in my country would cost less than €40. A 700km (434 miles) trip costs around €70.

As an American history professor and archaeologists, I was following along, listening, until you got to the tax portion at the end. And everything clicked. We Americans don’t like to pay taxes and do so rarely for petty stuff. Yet in Europe (not necessarily a bad thing) I’ve found that they tax as much as 50% for simple things like bread. If such a thing was done in the U.S. people would simply make their own grain and make bread for themselves, having pondered why the bread costs so much! The Governmental systems are different as mentioned- -railways aren’t priority up in the White House and thus, when you have a population of 360 million freedom loving, bible thumping, God fearing, tea drinking, war savaging, tax hating people, and a government good in roots yet floundering without republican ideals, then the problem is found.

Population density is the core problem. Comparing the state of rails to other countries fails to really capture this point. A country like France is roughly the size of the state of Texas. Cities end up being more densely populated as well as closer together making for far less line to lay. Most other factors end up stemming from this since it means at the most basic level that the cost efficiency of the infrastructure is just going to be lower.
