Hey all, a few people have had some questions about the break-down of costs for a ATP License at the beginning of this video so I thought I’d try to clear things up and show a few sources for the different components. College Cost: I misplaced the original source that lines up exactly with $133k but this statistic is about the same accounting for yearly growth. https://www.statista.com/statistics/238112/university-attendance-costs-in-the-united-states/ Private Pilots License: I said $8,000 in the video based off a source’s estimate. Looking at a random selection of flight schools’ estimates it could be even a little higher. Many have also pointed out that the vast majority of individuals can only apply with 40 hours flight time (a small minority of US pilots are trained under Title 14 of federal code part 141 which allow them to apply with 35 hours.) While I was choosing to use the lowest numbers for training as to not sensationalize the cost numbers (it’s sensational enough as it is) I probably should have done the math for 40 hours (maybe even more as many need more hours to gain the skills needed) to get a more average estimate. $9,950: https://www.illinoisaviation.com/flight-training/private-pilot-141/ $8,123: http://www.stcharlesflyingservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/CostEstimateToAdvance.pdf $7944: http://www.flyhafc.com $9500: https://www.executiveflighttraining.com/Private_Pilot_License.html Instrument Rating: The way I presented this bit was definitely confusing. The $900 I mentioned was accounting for the ground training and then I wrapped the hours needed for an instrument rating into the additional hours needed for a commercial pilots license (215/210.) Commercial Pilots License: From the comments I’ve read nobody really disagrees with the estimate I put for the overall CPL cost but here’s the source I used anyways. $80,000: https://www.l3airlineacademy.com/us-career-programs/pilot-training-cost

@r3poman671 would it be possible that you share the school name / how many students in your class / youngest student and oldest student age . any hidden costs that you came across so far and if the prices you mentioned are including the materials / costume / exam fees , how many airplaines the school have and how busy are the flying schedules ? May i send you an email ? i would be really grateful .

Bud The Cyborg Only 6% of current pilots are females. The video merely suggests actively recruiting them to help get the number of eligible pilots up. There is nothing sexist about it.....it’s just plain facts. If you had a shortage of real estate agents and you determined only 6% of real estate agents were men it seems like an intelligent move would be to recruit more men to be real estate agents.....correct? Of course my logic is quite as fun as throwing the racism or sexist card out there for the scavengers to feed on.🙄

So much Information is wrong in this video 😂 go to a commercial flight school. It costs around 80-100k for a two year program. During those two years you get your required 2000 flight hours so you can become a commercial pilot. It doesn’t cost over 300k 😂

You make on the very low end 60 thousand dollars a year. The second year as a first officer you would make about 100 thousand dollars. This is public information I really enjoy your videos but this information is just false. Most regional airlines are offering thousand dollar bonuses for new pilots.

So I just got re-recommended this, and the solution in place right now is to reduce the demand for flights so that the number of flights does not outstrip the number of pilots. Heh. Honestly they should either pay more or cover training costs.

In 2023 I will have had 6 years of military service with my PPL and IFR ratings and an associates degree in Unmanned Aircraft Sciences. I plan on attending a 4 year Professional Pilot degree program at Purdue or UND and do a career pathway with one of the big dogs (hopefully cargo). Even with the GI Bill covering tuition to get my BS, I'll still have to come up with about $68k for flight training. Is it ridiculously expensive? Yes Could I become a UAV pilot in the civilian world and make $100k/yr starting? Yes But I know that I won't be content with myself until I am getting paid at FL300. If you want it, you'll make a plan, and execute. Be aware of the numbers, but if you REALLY want it, don't let the numbers scare you. You got this. Good luck to all the future aviators of this planet!

This is simply not true. Regional airlines are offering more or less $50 per hour and the minimum is not 75 hours per month it is 100. Most airlines guarantee about 75 hours and most pilots end up flying about the average, so regional FOs start off making about $50,000 a year, not including bonuses, profit sharing, 401k matching, per diem, etc.

Private Pilot. The Obama administration made the rule for 1500 flight hours. If you want to fix the issue, get rid of that mandate. A pilot's skill isn't based on flight time. A pilot can literally just fly a single engine land plane all the way to 1500 hours. This is without jets, multiengine, complex or even large aircrafts over 12500 pounds. Airlines pride themselves in training and have a death rate of virtually 0 over 100,000 flight hours as oppose to GA which is 6 for every 100,000. Instead of hiring at 1500 hours, it makes more sense to hire pilots based on their skills and training level instead of pilots that bore holes through the sky. Also, you oversimplified the training it takes to get a license. Private Pilot takes 40 hours flight time. That is not a private license that was shown in the picture (It's an odd mix between a private license and a remote pilot license) and while you need 10 hours of dual credit with a CFI, you still need 40 hours for instrument. At the very least for instrument, you have to hvae 50 hours of pilot in command cross country experience on top of everything else (That does not mean these have to be done under instrument). There are also schools you can go to get a commercial license for around 60k and its rumored that airlines are going to drop the college degree rule just because they're so desperate for pilots. (Regionals may not follow the college degree rule depending on the regional airline.) Some people have said they are gong to join the armed forces, just so you know, you have to be atleast an officer if you plan on piloting one of their planes. So you're probably going to need college regardless on that front. GI bills may not cover flight training. It's really going to depend on where you decide to do this. If starting pay for regionals is 30,000 or less, literally no one would ever bother with airlines because you'd make more as a Certified flight Instructor. Those numbers seem fishy. You do not have to pay for flight training all up front. You can do what I did and just save 10 or 15 thousand and just get a rating, then do it again. It will take a while, but its not a bad way to do it. I don't ahve a lot of information on this so I'd recommend talking to other people about it but you can join the Civil Air Patrol as a way to rack up some hours. You don't get paid for it, but you gain flight time from it. Maintenance A+P is the only career I can think of where you can get paid as a private pilot to troubleshoot and flight check aircraft. So you can earn some flight time that way while getting paid as well. You have to get an A&P license though and you'll have to do more than just minor testing of the aircraft. There are options out there.

I came into this video with a mindset of “well, let’s see how these people get it wrong”. No, you hit it on the head. The process of licensing is extensively long and prohibitively expensive. I am currently a 40y/o US Army soldier looking to retire in the next couple years and I have always wanted to fly as a second career... but as it stands now, I’ll be mired in expensive training for years before I get the chance to fly for any kind of pay and by the time I am able to I will only be able to fly for a decade at most before I am forced to retire by FAA regulations. By that time I will most likely NOT be able to fly for a major carrier and make the “good money” because I will not have the seniority. The system is fucked fundamentally.
