I think with the 717 what really hurt it was timing. In the 90s the idea was bigger = better then 9/11 happened then the logic had to change and then the crash of the economy making things worse really made things change the marketplace. I think had the 717 stuck it out until the 2010s it might've had a better chance of selling better. Although maybe it being a design from the 1960s much like the 737 were a bit of a hindrance.

What this means is that Boeing basically gift wrapped and delivered one of the best offerings in a growing segment to its largest competitor for no apparent reason. A message from an American fan of aviation to all the Airbus fanboys here (or, more broadly, people here just to hate on anything Americans do): TL;DR: Just shut up. All Airbus's planes are based on Boeing's and Airbus can't come up with anything by itself. Everything Airbus has ever built has been a Boeing reactionary; Airbus only beats Boeing in marketing. Don't act like Airbus or Europe are somehow any better when it comes to corruption and shady business practices in the aviation industry either. A global duopoly is the definition of corruption, and Airbus is half of that duopoly. Accept it and stop acting like the US is the root of all problems. Long version: Just take a look at what all Airbus's models are based on. A380 = 747 A330 = 767 A320-21 series = 757 A319-18 series and A310 = 737 A340 = also 747 A350 = 787 Boeing does the innovating. Then Airbus copies their work, changes it a bit, and finds a way to outsell Boeing on what is essentially the exact same design, all the while they rub it in Boeing's face and do everything in their power just to spite them and throw monkey wrenches into their plans. Boeing might be a sore loser, and might be slowly losing the global marketing war against Airbus, and even I can't stand them at times for wrecking American aviation's image as a whole, but y'all can't deny: they're not pushovers when it comes to design and innovation - which is a claim they can make a lot more than Airbus. Even the 737 max (or at least, what led up to it) is a testament to Boeing's engineering in a rather perverse way. They just kept finding ways to re-engineer the same ancient 1960s airliner and have it operate similarly to the last one despite changing technologies. They did it for years and years, again and again, before the gap in technology and aerodynamics finally caught up with them. If Boeing is a spoiled kid that throws a tantrum when it loses (and I'll grant you that bit), then it's a really SMART kid that throws a tantrum when it loses. And the reason it's throwing a tantrum, in most cases, is because Airbus copied its work, but somehow got a higher score on the test than it did. In the particular instance of the topic of this video, however, it's because it found out the third kid that was giving them trouble, suddenly tag-teamed it out of nowhere with help from its arch enemy, whom it thought wasn't even in this fight. And in the case of the Max, it finally decided to play dirty with the FAA and stoop down to Airbus's level, but then it got caught. I'm not saying that was right. It was despicable. But you think Airbus doesn't play dirty?! Don't act like that kind of corruption is only in America or with Boeing. It's with every big company, and it needs to be stopped EVERYWHERE. In America, yes. But in Europe too. Boeing and Airbus are BOTH petulant children and BOTH need to have their companies downsized to encourage more innovation and new companies taking hold of segments of the market (don't forget that Embraer and Bombardier have both been bought out by the respective giants). But I'd argue Airbus is just a bit worse because they can't come up with anything by themselves and go out of their way to antagonize their competitors just because. Boeing is smart, but a whiny brat and Airbus is a sleazy, cheating bully with no talent of its own other than smooth-talking. You decide which is worse.

Matt James I didn’t say the NEO variants were before the 787. I just said they hadn’t crashed on had any incidents

24 päeva tagasi
Matt James
Matt James

@Thomas Mortimore Not the neo versions that you listed. Boeing and Airbus engineers still play a big part in engine design. Their engineers still collaborate with engine builders. Except possibly for Rolls-Royce.

24 päeva tagasi
Thomas Mortimore
Thomas Mortimore

Matt James one final point I do have to nitpick on. Airbus and Boeing don’t make the engines so you can’t say Airbus stole innovation from Boeing for the engines. Oh and the A318/A319 are older than 787 too

24 päeva tagasi
Matt James
Matt James

@Thomas Mortimore I never said they improved the 737. It has always been a mediocre aircraft. I said it was a feat of engineering that they were able to take a design from the 1960s and have its replacements all handle similarly to the original design, and to do that for 50 years as the technology gap between the original plane and whichever new one they were designing only widened. Frankly, I'm surprised there wasn't a serious design compromisation of the 737 a long time ago. Technically speaking that's a very difficult thing to do and not have any serious hitches for 50 years. Most of the Airbuses you listed all have one thing between them - they're new. Except for the A380 and A340, they're all newer than the Dreamliner. They haven't had time to have accidents yet whereas most of Boeing's fleet (the exception being the 787) especially the 747, definitely has. Before the 787 their newest model is the 777, which has been around for over 20 years now. Airbuses could turn out to be just as, if not more dangerous than Boeings, yet at this point we can't say which is safer given the much younger age of most Airbuses. Statistics with similar lengths of data acquisition don't exist for them yet. But that is still beside the point - I brought up the safety records of the Boeings to dismiss the accusations being thrown around that all Boeings are somehow dangerous just because of the Max. I never even said which brand was safer. Just that Boeings aren't dangerous in themselves. Even if MH370 were related to design, that would still mark the only time a design-related accident occurred and the backups and redundancies on the plane failed to bring the vast majority of passengers back intact. The 777 would still have an amazing record. I actually didn't know about the Boeing/Embraer deal. That's good. I like Embraer. They're not Boeing or Airbus and the 175 is a great airplane. Again - I never said Airbus doesn't innovate. With the immense size and lifetimes of the 2 companies, Airbus is still responsible for a lot of innovation - just less than that of Boeing. All the systems on the insides of the planes are one thing, but when it comes to the outside of the plane - the aerodynamics, the engines, and what really make it fly at the most basic level and define the way it flies, this is where Airbus has taken a lot of cues from Boeing. Now they're allowed to and I accept that. But that would still mean Boeing has innovated more in those respects. Maybe the relationship between Airbus and Boeing that I am trying to describe to you can be better understood like this - if aviation is a forest that needs a passage through it, then Boeing went in first and cleared the area for Airbus to come in and turn it into a modern paved road, with 12 lanes, an efficient layout, streetlights, tunnels, and a smooth surface for passenger comfort. Anyway you slice it, Airbus wouldn't be where it is without Boeing, and Boeing still make good planes that aren't the 737 Max. THAT is what I'm trying to remind people of. You are missing all of my main points and nitpicking. If you take ANYTHING away from this response, please make SURE it is the paragraph before this one.
