Corporate America became powerful by taking the cream of the top for the highest profits achievable. Just how do you think that will affect the distribution of information and good if we eliminate the Post Office? We must maintain the post office to make sure that everyone has the right to be linked to the distribution system through the post office. Why in the world would you want to change the face of the country for no good reason. Yes, there will be changes to the system with atomists guided transportation there will be no delivery person, and the system will stay in place. When the time comes it will provide capital for the guaranteed wage when that comes into effect.

Ben Franklin appointed first Post-Master General for British North America. Later the American PMG. Railway post offices are British: Just a few years after Rowland Hill introduced prepaid adhesive coupons for mail - called them postage stamps - the Royal Mail (open to the paying public since 1665) experimented with a railway run of mail from London to Edinburgh with sorting happening in a modified postal car. Immediate success. Thereafter EVERYWHERE in the British Empire and other countries rail car sorting became the norm. This was early 1840's in UK. Railway Post Offices were developed in Canada. Some villages or towns were too new, too small for a PO so the Royal Mail leased rail cars, outfit them appropriately and made scheduled stops along lines to receive (and sort) outbound mail and received customers in a small office front in the car and had mail ready for recipients. US, Australia, India, South Africa all copied. USPS could revitalise today if not for political meddling (fedex, ups anyone?) and be great again. Very interesting video. A PO put people in touch with their national govt and people around the WORLD. It was a sign the area was settled well enough something as innocuous as a PO could exist - a settlement had become a town.

I highly recommend that every American taxpayer, as well as every USPS employee, take some time to know, and learn how the USPS came into existence. Unfortunately, the USPS employees, have been indoctrinated into believing, and thinking, that this branch of our government took place in the early 80s. Those of us who know the real story, should commit it memory.

So I was thinking if the post office made America great. Could it also be the problem. Just think about it if we had people working as hard today as back then to get it right we would never would have need Amazon for delivery. In fact we could have been the words best. But we got to comfortable and given the workers way to much to start there's nothing to work for. You start off at top pay and benefits and it just keeps coming and they keep doing less. Why not no worries on there end they will be in the next day and the next 30 years.

Please fix this and future videos: Calling America "a vast untamed wilderness" is a huge mistake because it ignores the long history of Native Americans, which is a core topic of American history which is particularly egrigous to gloss over. The territories happened to be significantly depopulated because of the great dying, a multi infection plauge that wiped out ~90% of the inhabitants, but before that it had typically been well tended everywhere.

How the first airmail pilots used to find their way? They were guided by giant concrete arrows built on the ground, called Beacon Stations. "They were at the base of 50 foot skeleton towers that had a 24" or 36" rotating beacon and in the early days painted Chrome Yellow. Where electricity was unavailable they had a generator to power the beacon. They pointed to the next higher numbered beacon station, directing the pilot along his route. All arrows pointed east on the west-east airways and north on the south-north airways.  They were built between December 1926 and November 1932, when metal arrows became the standard."

I know this comment is a little bit late, but I have to say it... In 3:24 , the US flag has 35 stars, and the post office show date 1862... But by 1862, there were only 34 states; the 35th state, West Virginia, was admitted by 1863.

A great, informational video production.  Thanks for putting it together.  One lack of foresight on the part of the US postal service that has always baffled me is their refusal to adopt the opportunity to become an email provider.  Imagine how different communication might be today if our email addresses included the @usps.com!

It greatly expanded commerce. Anyone, no matter where they were on the continent could look up in a Sears and Roebuck catalog almost anything they needed or wanted up to and including a covered wagon and get it delivered within a month or so. The video touched on it but it probably should have a complete video on how the post office started and expanded POST ROADS that now go by a different name INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS.

I think its too simplistic to credit the post office for a lack of a sovereignty movement in the US, it's more due to ethnic makeup, and don't look now but you have the Viva la Raza movement and push for bilingual Spanish nowadays in places like CA, TX, FL.Not to mention Texas always points to its ability to leave anytime, and has the strongest "state first" mentality. You're about to find out what it was like for Canada to have Quebec, Russia to have Siberians/Central Asians vs Europeans, China to have Tibetans, etc.

This is obviously 2 years after the fact, and I did enjoy the video, but I think the language around the West's relative isolation from the East Coast could be done a little more carefully- "untamed and dangerous wilderness" and "vast, untamed wilderness" both play into the erasure of Native Americans, and suggest that "taming" this land would be necessary and beneficial.

Love the videos! This is the first one where I don't really agree with your thesis at the end. It is hard to argue that Americans are all on the same page.... There may not be any official sovereignty movements but there is clearly a huge divide in what they believe being an American means/requires (which is not nearly as contentious an issue in Canada). Also they had a civil war.
