Living on the moon would be very, very expensive, but let's take nine minutes to calculate just how expensive it would be.

@Willoughby Krenzteinburg no.. 1 kg is 2.2 lbs. The math is wrong

7 päeva tagasi
Willoughby Krenzteinburg
Willoughby Krenzteinburg

That figure is simply taking the cost of producing the rocket and dividing it by the weight. It doesn't LITERALLY cost $12,500 to put a pound of payload into orbit. If an astronaut takes a dumb before launch, he didn't just save $6,000 in launch costs.

I would have given you a thumbs up because this is a solid video with what appears to be completely reasonable figures, but you suggest using private companies for it, and that's a very, very stupid idea. The last thing we need trashing our ambitions for space is some greedy, egotistical schmuck trying to commercialize the process and profit off of taxpayers.

With this $36 billion budget is really hefty price. Now imagine, have you watched this film called the iron sky? This film is where the Nazis have built the permanent moon base with very advanced infrastructures and daily life needs for not only few people but hundreds of staffs in the film. So how much in real life does it cost by estimation if this film turn into reality?

Cool! 98 million (in 2016) for 4 people for a year, $24MM each. Now, I just can't remember, what is the slop factor - cost escalation factor - for government project estimates? Is it a closer to a factor of 3 or it is 300? This is why private space firms are the only hope. And even they will have overoptimistic estimates, and fatalities, and as soon as that happens, subsequent political correctness forces will probably sound their death knell :(

If the Earth no longer existed, then the Moon colony would be completely independent. Therefore, once it was set up, it wouldn't cost anything! And if the Earth still existed, they should be made to be completely independent anyway, plus send back taxes! 🙂

No one has been on the moon. Currently, people cannot survive leaving low earth orbit. Money is not an issue. Money is printed at will. This is why inflation is such a problem. Other than the potential for helium-3, is there a significance to being on the moon? Why not a mega-structure in (preferably earth) orbit? Seems like that scales better than colonizing the lunar surface. To be safe from an extinction event on earth, we only need to live in space, which possibly means only investing in getting people and material into space, as we do now. That puts many nations in play, as it's way more feasible to put a rocket in orbit than send one to the moon. And we need all the help we can get. Even as technology improves, I think lunar colonization would remain incredibly slow and costly. I'd use the moon as a test bed and take the shot at mars.

Why spend an astronomical amount of money to live on another planet when it would be way easier and cheaper to take care of the environment we already have? If anything I believe it's just shitty to want to exploit this planet for all its worth and then go on the next planet to do the same thing and repeat the cycle. At least to me this shows how shitty humans can be. Sorry about the rant. Good video.
